Rising from tidal flats on a network of wooden boardwalks, Agats is the administrative heart of the Asmat people — one of the world's great woodcarving cultures. Few cruise itineraries reach here; those that do offer something genuinely rare.
All ships tender into Agats — there is no quay for large vessels. Tides and river conditions can affect timing.
💡 Pro move: Dress modestly and bring cash (IDR); there are no ATMs or card readers in town. Sturdy footwear with grip helps on the sometimes-slippery boardwalks.
No cruise pier exists — all landings are by tender to a riverbank or basic dock.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Expedition ships (Ponant, Silversea, etc.) | Riverside tender landing, Agats📍 | Tendered |
| Private yachts | Agats riverfront anchorage📍 | Tendered |
Excursions here are cultural at their core — the Asmat world is the destination.
Founded in 1973 by missionary Father Frank Trenkenschuh, this world-class collection holds over 1,200 Asmat artifacts — ancestor poles, ceremonial shields, tifa drums, and carvings that belong on any serious ethnographic bucket list. Open Monday–Saturday, 9 AM–4 PM (closed Sundays).
Find Agats cultural tours →Watch master carvers shape canoes, bisj poles, and ceremonial figures from ironwood. Buying directly from the carvers supports tradition and usually means far better pieces than any market stall.
Find carving workshop tours →Zodiac or speedboat trip through mangrove-lined channels to outlying villages like Syuru. Arrive to canoes of warriors in traditional dress — some voyages include ceremonial greetings, mock battles, and invitations into communal longhouses.
Find Asmat river village tours →Wander Agats's own streets — which happen to be elevated wooden walkways suspended above tidal mud. The local market, Catholic mission buildings, and tribal monument give the feel of a town that exists entirely on its own terms.
Find Agats walking tours →Agats is compact and entirely walkable on its network of raised boardwalks — the whole town is the walk.
From the tender landing, follow the main boardwalk north past the local market and tribal monument, then turn toward the Diocese of Agats cathedral and on to the Asmat Museum. Return via the river-facing boardwalk for views over the tidal flats.
