Deir Dronka — Monastery of the Virgin Mary

Al-Muharraq Monastery

One of the oldest and holiest Christian monasteries in Egypt, Al-Muharraq is a fortress-like complex 50 km north where tradition holds the Holy Family lived for six months. The ancient Church of the Virgin at its core dates to the 1st century.

History

Tombs of the Nomarchs & Necropolis of Meir

Carved into Gebel Asyut al-Gharbi, the rock-cut Tombs of the Nomarchs (the Siut tombs of Khety and Iti-ibi) date to the First Intermediate Period and feature reliefs of marching soldiers, with inscriptions referencing the Herakleopolitan king Merikare. The nearby Necropolis of Meir, about 50 km north near El-Qusiya, holds well-preserved Middle Kingdom tombs with vivid farming and hunting scenes.
