Getting Ashore

All access is by Zodiac (RIB) from an anchored ship; a DOC permit is required and only licensed expedition operators may land.

Getting Ashore at Auckland Island

  • 1
Zodiac to Enderby IslandShips anchor in Carnley Harbour or off Enderby Island. Zodiacs ferry passengers to designated landing sites such as Sandy Bay or the Northern Cliffs boardwalk.
  • 2
Biosecurity checkAll clothing and gear is checked for seeds and pests before landing — this is mandatory under New Zealand DOC rules to protect the island from introduced species.
  • 3
Guided walk onlyA licensed guide or DOC representative leads every shore visit. Independent wandering off marked tracks is not permitted.

💡 Pro move: Landings are weather-dependent and may be cancelled at any time. Zodiacs-only cruising (no landing) may substitute if conditions deteriorate.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

There is no pier or cruise terminal — all visits are by Zodiac tender from an anchored expedition ship.

Insider Tips

  • 🧥
Dress for subantarctic weather. Wind, rain, and cold are the norm even in summer (Dec–Feb). Waterproof layers, gumboots or waterproof hiking boots, and gloves are essential — your ship will advise on gear.
  • 🌿
Biosecurity is serious. DOC requires all clothing and bags to be lint-rolled and checked before landing. Follow all crew instructions — violations can result in being denied a landing.
  • 📷
Give sea lions space. They look docile but large bulls can move fast. Keep the 5-metre minimum distance your guide specifies. A 300 mm lens is ideal for close-looking wildlife shots.
  • 🛶
Landings are never guaranteed. Swells and weather can prevent Zodiacs from landing on any given day. Most itineraries build in extra time for this reason, but come mentally prepared for a Zodiac cruise only.
  • 💰
Nothing to buy ashore. There are no shops, cafes, or services of any kind. Bring everything you need from the ship — including water and snacks if your operator does not supply them on the Zodiac.
