Getting Ashore

All Austral Islands are tender ports — ships anchor in open water and ferry passengers to modest village quays by tender boat.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Board the tender at the shipTenders run continuously from the ship's platform; no reservation needed for most lines. Seas can be choppy — this is open ocean, not a sheltered lagoon.
  • 2
Rurutu: land at Moerai quayTenders drop at the small quay in Moerai village. The village, caves, and walking tracks are all within easy reach on foot or by local taxi.
  • 3
Tubuai: land near the northern reef passThe only break in Tubuai's encircling reef is on the island's north side, so ships anchor there and tenders ferry passengers to the village quay. Mataura, the main village, sits on the south coast and is reached by local taxi or shuttle. Local guides usually meet ships.
  • 4
Raivavae: anchor in the lagoonRaivavae's reef passage allows some vessels inside; tenders land at the village quay. The island is small and easily explored by bicycle or on foot.

💡 Pro move: Infrastructure is minimal — there are no large cruise terminals, ATMs may be limited, and card acceptance is scarce. Bring XPF cash from Papeete.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

No formal cruise piers exist in the Austral Islands; all ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to village landings.

Wildlife

Humpback Whale Watching (Rurutu)

Between July and October, humpback whales from Antarctica gather in Rurutu's waters to mate and calve. Glass-clear seas make surface sightings routine, and some operators offer snorkeling encounters with these giants.

Rurutu Cave Tour — Ana Ae'o & Ana Taupe'e

Rurutu is dubbed the 'Troglodyte Island' for good reason. Ana Ae'o (Mitterrand Cave, visited by the French president in 1990) and the eerie Ana Taupe'e (Monster's Cave) are limestone formations created by uplifted coral reefs — historically used as burial chambers.

History

Tubuai: Bounty Mutineers & Fort George

After the Bounty mutiny in 1789, Fletcher Christian attempted to settle Tubuai, building an earthwork fort named Fort George at Ta'ahueia before abandoning the island months later. The fort's earthwork remains can still be traced, and Bloody Bay recalls the violent clashes with local islanders. Guided tours connect the history with the on-the-ground sites.

Village Weaving & Craft Demonstrations

Rurutu is famous throughout French Polynesia for exceptionally fine woven pandanus products — hats, baskets, and mats. Village women often demonstrate techniques and sell work directly. Raivavae is known for traditional canoe carving.

Ancient Marae Sites

Each island has marae — ancient stone ceremonial platforms used for religious and political gatherings. Raivavae's Marae Atoni and Rurutu's coastal marae are accessible on guided walks, offering a window into pre-European Polynesian society.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
Bring XPF cash from Papeete. ATMs are scarce or absent on most Austral Islands, and card readers are rarely available in village markets or at tender landings. Stock up before departure.
  • 🌊
Tender seas can be rough. These are exposed anchorages in the South Pacific — swells are common. If you're prone to motion sickness, take medication before the tender ride ashore.
  • 🐋
Whale season is July–October. Humpbacks migrate to Rurutu's warm waters in those months. If your call falls outside this window, don't expect whale encounters — but caves and culture are year-round.
  • 🌿
Infrastructure is minimal by design. No resorts, chain restaurants, or large stores. Embrace it — the Australs' appeal is exactly this remoteness. A small day pack with water and snacks is wise.
  • 🗣️
French is the working language; English is limited. Basic French phrases help enormously. Locals are warm and welcoming even across language barriers.
