Insider Tips

  • 💵
Cash is king. Algerian Dinars cannot be imported or exported — change money at the port bank or a city bureau de change. DZD 100–200 covers most taxi rides.
  • 🐒
Don't feed the macaques. Gouraya's Barbary macaques are a protected species. Feeding disrupts their behaviour and you risk a bite — observe from a respectful distance.
  • 👕
Dress modestly. Bejaia is more relaxed than many Algerian cities, but covering shoulders and knees shows respect and is required to enter mosques or shrines.
  • 🗣️
French is your friend. Arabic and Tamazight are dominant, but French is widely understood in Bejaia — more so than English. A few French phrases go a long way.
  • Watch your all-aboard time. The port occasionally prioritises commercial vessel movements in the evening. Confirm your ship's departure time and allow 20 min to clear the gate from the city centre.
