Insider Tips

  • 🎨
Download the Impressionist trail app before arriving — the Office de Tourisme de Bougival's free guide maps all plaque locations on Île de la Chaussée.
  • 🏰
Book Versailles tickets online well in advance. Same-day entry is often unavailable and queues are brutal without a timed slot.
  • 🚕
Uber works well here — signal is good and drivers can reach Malmaison or Versailles easily. Pre-book for the return if your ship departs at a fixed time.
  • 💶
Bring euros in small bills. Bougival is a quiet residential town; ATMs exist but are not on every corner. Card acceptance is good at museums.
  • ☁️
The Impressionist light is best in morning or late afternoon. Overcast days are actually ideal for photography — harsh midday sun flattens the river views the painters loved.
