Brava Island, Cape Verde

Cape Verde's 'Island of Flowers' is a tender port of rugged volcanic mountains, cobblestone colonial streets, and a pace of life that big-ship itineraries rarely disturb.

Getting Ashore

Ships anchor off Furna — the island's only port — and run tenders to the small quay.

Tendering into Furna

  • 1
Collect your tender ticketTender tickets are issued on board; collect yours early as lines build quickly, especially on days with strong swell.
  • 2
Land at Furna quayThe tender dock is Furna's small commercial quay. The village itself is tiny — most activity is the road up toward Nova Sintra.
  • 3
Take a taxi or aluguer to Nova SintraThe 6 km road climbs ~500 m via nearly 100 hairpin bends. Aluguers (shared taxis) gather near the quay. Negotiate the fare (allow 15-20 min each way).

💡 Pro move: Brava has no airport — Furna is the only entry point. The tender landing can be rough in swell; check with your ship if conditions are borderline.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

All cruise ships tender at Furna — the pier is short and serves local ferries from Fogo and Santiago.

Insider Tips

  • Tender conditions matter. Brava sits in a swell-prone channel between Fogo and Santiago. If seas are rough, tendering may be delayed or cancelled — check ship announcements early.
  • 🚕
Take a taxi to Nova Sintra. The road is 6 km with nearly 100 switchbacks — walking it in the heat takes 1.5-2 hrs each way. Aluguers wait at the quay; agree on a price before getting in.
  • 💵
Bring cash in escudos. Card acceptance is very limited on Brava. Exchange euros or dollars on the ship or bring small bills — there is no ATM reliably available at Furna.
  • 🌿
Best months for hiking are November–June, when skies are clear and humidity is low. July–October is warmer and slightly wetter, but the hills are at their most lush.
  • 🕒
Budget time carefully. The round trip taxi ride to Nova Sintra plus a 2-hr wander uses most of a standard port call. Pick one excursion beyond town — Fajã d'Água or a hike — and don't overplan.
