Insider Tips

  • 🌡️
Dress for heat and humidity. Campeche is hot and muggy year-round. Lightweight, breathable clothing, a hat, and SPF are essential — the cobblestone streets offer little shade.
  • 💵
Pesos beat dollars for small purchases. Street food, colectivos, and market vendors prefer cash in MXN. ATMs inside the walled city dispense pesos. USD accepted at many restaurants but at poor rates.
  • Campeche is a small-ship destination. No mega-ship terminal exists. If your ship is here, it's likely a boutique or expedition vessel — enjoy the lack of crowds that larger ports get.
  • 🏺
Don't skip Fuerte de San Miguel. The jade masks and Jaina ceramic figurines in its archaeological museum are world-class Mayan artifacts that rarely get the attention they deserve.
  • 🚕
Agree on taxi fares upfront. Taxis in Campeche don't use meters. Standard fare to the historic center from the pier is 50-80 MXN. For Edzná, expect 600-900 MXN round-trip with waiting time.
