The first place Captain Cook set foot in Australia, Cooktown feels like the real frontier — history, Indigenous culture, and wild tropics meeting at the edge of Cape York.
Cooktown is a tender port — ships anchor offshore and passengers ride small boats to the Cooktown Wharf on the Endeavour River, right at the edge of town.
💡 Pro move: Credit cards accepted widely; ATMs on Charlotte Street. Mobile coverage (Telstra) is generally reliable in town.
All cruise ships use tenders to reach the Cooktown Wharf on the Endeavour River.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Most cruise lines (P&O, Coral Expeditions, Ponant, etc.) | Cooktown Wharf, Endeavour River📍 | Tendered |
| Small expedition vessels (some) | Cooktown Wharf📍 | Docked |
Cooktown punches well above its size — the museum alone justifies the call, and Grassy Hill offers one of the best views in tropical Queensland.
The must-do. The original anchor and cannon from HMS Endeavour — the cannon recovered from the reef in 1969 and the bower anchor in 1971 — are displayed in a beautifully restored 1880s former convent (St Mary's, built 1888–89). Galleries cover Cook's landing, the Palmer River gold rush, Chinese migration, and the Guugu Yimithirr people.
Find Cooktown Museum tours →Climb to the same hilltop where Cook stood in 1770 to chart a way through the reef. The 1886 lighthouse still stands; the 360° views over the Endeavour River and Coral Sea are outstanding. Steep climb — allow 30 min on foot or take a local shuttle.
Find Grassy Hill guided tours →Local operators run 1–2 hour river cruises departing near the wharf. You'll spot saltwater crocodiles, migratory birds, and mangroves while hearing the story of Cook's 48-day stay on the river.
Find Endeavour River crocodile cruises →The Milbi Wall near the wharf is a vivid Indigenous mosaic telling the Guugu Yimithirr story of Cook's arrival. From there, stroll Charlotte Street to see the Cook Statue, Queen Victoria Monument, Reconciliation Rocks on the esplanade, and gold-rush-era Queensland architecture.
Find Cooktown heritage walks →Established in 1878 — among Queensland's oldest — these tropical gardens sit within the 62-hectare Gallop Botanic Reserve and include walking tracks, heritage stone paths, and Nature's Powerhouse — a visitor centre with a café and the Vera Scarth-Johnson Gallery of botanical illustrations.
Find Botanic Gardens tours →Cooktown is compact and walkable from the wharf — Charlotte Street, the museum, and the esplanade are all flat; Grassy Hill is steep but rewarding.
Walk from the tender wharf along the Endeavour River esplanade past the Milbi Wall and Reconciliation Rocks, then up Charlotte Street passing the Cook Statue, heritage pubs, and the Queen Victoria Monument. Return along the esplanade for river views.
Follow Botanic Gardens Road from Charlotte Street into the gardens. Walk the shaded paths to Nature's Powerhouse for a coffee, then loop back through the gardens. An excellent choice on hot days for the tree cover.
