Alaska the way it actually is — a working fishing port with no road to the outside world, world-class salmon, calving glaciers, and expedition ships instead of mega-liners.

Getting Ashore in Cordova
1
Small ships: City DockExpedition ships dock directly at the Cordova City Dock (T-Dock) in the working small-boat harbor. Walk out of the harbor area and you're on First Street in about 10–15 minutes.
2
Larger vessels: tender to harborShips anchoring in Orca Inlet run tenders to the harbor float. Follow the dock to the main street — the walk is flat and scenic past fishing vessels and stacked crab pots.
3
Taxis & toursNo Uber or Lyft. One or two local taxi companies operate but can be scarce. Book any out-of-town excursion (Sheridan Glacier, jet boat to Childs Glacier) through your ship or a local outfitter before arrival.
💡 Pro move: Cordova's harbor is a working commercial fishing port. Watch for forklifts, boat trailers, and net mending on the docks — it's part of the charm.
Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line
Cordova has no dedicated cruise terminal; small expedition ships tie up at the City Dock while larger vessels anchor and tender passengers to the harbor float.
Typical cruise-line arrival arrangements; confirm your ship’s assignment.
Cordova punches well above its small-town size — from glacier kayaking and jetboat rides to calving faces, to simply wandering a harbor full of real fishermen.
Nature
Sheridan Glacier Kayaking & Hiking
A van ride (~18 miles) delivers you to Sheridan Glacier Recreation Area, where you can kayak among icebergs on the glacial lake and hike on the ice with crampons. Cordova's most popular guided adventure.
Jet Boat to Childs Glacier & Million Dollar Bridge
The Copper River Highway washes out at Mile 36, so the only way to reach the thunderously calving Childs Glacier and the 1910 railroad engineering marvel is by jet boat up the Copper River. Spectacular.
The Native Village of Eyak's cultural center houses one of only a handful of fully reassembled killer whale skeletons in the world (41 ft). Next door, the Cordova Historical Museum covers the copper mining railroad era and the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill recovery.
Cordova claims the title of sea otter capital of the world — look into the harbor as soon as you step ashore. The Copper River Delta is also one of North America's most important shorebird staging areas, with millions of birds stopping during migration.
⏱ 1–3 hrs🦦 Sea otters in harbor🐦 World-class birding
The Copper River Delta is the largest contiguous wetland on North America's Pacific coast. A floatplane or helicopter tour delivers jaw-dropping views of braided rivers, tidewater glaciers, and the endless expanse of wild Alaska.
Copper River Salmon is considered by chefs the finest wild salmon in the world for its high fat content from the long river migration. Eating it fresh in Cordova during the season is a bucket-list food experience.
⏱ 1 hr🐟 June–September peak🍽️ Reluctant Fisherman or Baja Taco
Downtown Cordova is compact and walkable; the harbor and First Street are the core, with Eyak Lake a pleasant 20-minute stroll away.
Harbor to Downtown First Street
0.6 mi · 15 min · Easy · Flat
Walk from the City Dock along the harbor past fishing vessels, net lofts, and the small-boat basin to First Street. Pop into the Ilanka Cultural Center, the Cordova Center/museum, and the locally owned shops. Baja Taco's red school bus near the harbor is a mandatory stop.
Head up Railroad Avenue from downtown to reach the serene shores of Lake Eyak, flanked by steep mountains. Watch for bald eagles, trumpeter swans, and spawning salmon in the connecting creeks. The historic Powder House Bar sits at the lake's edge.

Insider Tips
🌧️
Pack full waterproofs. Cordova sits in a temperate rainforest and averages over 160 inches of rain a year. Waterproof jacket, pants, and footwear are not optional — they're essential.
🚕
No rideshare exists. Uber and Lyft don't operate here. Taxis are limited. If you want to reach Sheridan Glacier or any out-of-town site, book your excursion before the ship arrives.
🐟
Eat the salmon. Copper River Salmon season peaks June–August. Fresh fillets, smoked salmon, and halibut tacos from Baja Taco (the red school bus near the harbor) are the definitive Cordova meal.
🏪
Sundays are quiet. Many local shops and some restaurants close on Sundays. Major tour operators and the museums typically open for cruise ship days — but don't count on everything being open.
🦦
Look in the harbor immediately. Sea otters float in the small-boat harbor year-round. You may spot them before you've walked 100 yards from the dock — no tour required.
🛍️
Shop local — it's all local. There are no chain souvenir stores. Look for hand-dyed yarn, copper jewelry, and jarred smoked salmon from the shops on First Street. Your dollars go directly to Cordova families.
