Insider Tips

  • 💵
CAD is standard — but many downtown shops near the US border accept USD. You'll get change in Canadian coins, so it's better to get a bit of CAD or just use a card.
  • 🚕
No rideshare in Cornwall — Uber and Lyft don't operate here. Local taxis (Choice Taxi, Veterans Blue Line) are reliable and usually wait near the harbour. Agree on price or confirm metered rates before getting in.
  • 🗺️
Upper Canada Village needs half a day — if it's on your list, head there early. It's 30 min west by taxi and worth every minute.
  • 🏛️
The Lost Villages story is one of Canada's most dramatic — ten communities were deliberately flooded in 1958 to build the St. Lawrence Seaway. The museum and the Cornwall Community Museum both cover this.
  • 🌊
Weather off the river — the St. Lawrence creates its own microclimate. Bring a light layer even in summer; wind off the water can be cooler than expected.
