Getting Ashore

There is no dock or pier at Cosmoledo — all passengers reach land via inflatable Zodiac boats and step directly into knee-deep water on the beach.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Zodiac boardingYour ship anchors outside the outer reef. Expedition staff run scheduled Zodiac departures throughout the day. Wear your water shoes and keep your dry bag zipped.
  • 2
Wet landingStep out of the Zodiac into shallow water (knee to thigh deep) and walk up the beach. Footing on coral sand and reef flat can be uneven — take it slowly.
  • 3
Biosecurity checkBefore going ashore, all passengers undergo a mandatory biosecurity check: scrubbing shoes, vacuuming backpack velcro, and emptying pockets to prevent invasive species introduction.

💡 Pro move: Cosmoledo is not suitable for passengers with significant mobility limitations due to the wet landings and uneven terrain.

Insider Tips

  • 👟
Two pairs of footwear are essential. Bring thick-soled water shoes for the wet Zodiac landing and reef walking, plus sturdy walking sandals for dry beach exploration.
  • 🌞
Use reef-safe sunscreen only. Standard chemical sunscreens are banned to protect the coral. Long-sleeve UPF clothing and a wide-brimmed hat with a chin strap are strongly recommended.
  • 🎒
Bring a dry bag. Salt spray during Zodiac transit will soak unprotected cameras, phones, and binoculars. Leave valuables you don't need on the ship.
  • 💧
No facilities ashore — prepare on the ship. There are no restrooms, food, water, or shade structures anywhere on the atoll. Fill your water bottle and visit the bathroom before boarding the Zodiac.
  • 🌿
Biosecurity is mandatory, not optional. You will scrub your shoes and vacuum backpack seams before landing. It protects the ecosystem — take it seriously.
