Insider Tips

  • 🚲
Rent or borrow a bike. Dessau is one of the flattest cities in Germany — a bicycle turns a 30-min walk into a 10-min ride and opens up the Wörlitz Park road (15 km each way) as a real option.
  • 🍽️
The Kornhaus is right at the pier. This 1930 Bauhaus-designed riverside restaurant (architect Carl Fieger) on the Elbe is both architecturally significant and serves good German food — ideal for lunch or coffee before re-boarding.
  • 🏛️
Combo tickets save money. The Bauhaus Foundation Dessau offers a joint ticket covering the Bauhaus Building and Masters' Houses (around €14). Check at the first site you visit.
  • 🌊
River level matters. The Elbe can run very low in summer. If your ship can't berth, expect buses to the city center — not a dealbreaker, just be prepared.
  • 🛍️
Shops close on Sundays. If your call day is Sunday, supermarkets and most shops will be shut. Museums and restaurants remain open — plan accordingly.
