Getting Ashore in Eilat

  • 1
Clear Israeli port securityExpect passport checks and bag screening both on arrival and when re-boarding. Israeli port security is among the most rigorous in the world — factor this into your return time.
  • 2
Shuttle or taxi to the cityThe North Beach promenade and tourist zone are about 2.5 km away. Most cruise lines run a shuttle. Taxis are metered and plentiful outside the port gate. In summer (May–Sept) temperatures exceed 40°C — walking in midday heat is not advised.

Closest beach on footDekel Beach is about 1 km north of the pier — a short, mostly flat walk along the waterfront if the heat is manageable. (Eilat's famous Coral Beach Nature Reserve is ~9 km south and needs a taxi or bus.)

💡 Pro move: Shabbat (Friday sunset – Saturday sunset): public buses stop, many shops close. Tourist-facing businesses, restaurants, and taxis generally continue operating in Eilat.

Insider Tips

  • 🔒
Build in extra re-boarding time. Israeli port security is thorough — queues can form. Be back at the pier at least 45-60 minutes before all-aboard.
  • 💧
Hydrate constantly. Eilat's desert heat is no joke. Carry water everywhere, even in winter. Summer temperatures regularly hit 40°C+ (104°F).
  • 👟
Pack water shoes. Most Eilat beaches are pebbly rather than sandy. Water shoes make entry into the Red Sea far more comfortable.
  • 🛍
Duty-free shopping. Eilat is a VAT-free zone — electronics, cosmetics, and clothing are 17% cheaper than elsewhere in Israel. Great for last-minute buys.
  • 🇯🇴
Petra is tempting but risky solo. The border crossing can cause multi-hour delays. Only go to Petra on a ship-sponsored excursion that guarantees a late departure if you're stuck.
