Getting Ashore

Formentera has no deep-water cruise pier — you'll arrive by tender or cross from Ibiza by fast ferry.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Tender or Ferry?Small / boutique ships (Windstar, Ponant, SeaDream) anchor off La Savina and tender passengers ashore. Most large cruise ships dock at Ibiza — you'll take a high-speed public ferry (Balearia / Trasmapi / Aquabus) from Ibiza Town to La Savina, about 30–35 minutes each way, roughly €20–25 round-trip.
  • 2
Arriving at La SavinaTender or ferry drops you right at the La Savina marina. Bike and scooter rental shops, taxis, and the public bus (L1/L2) are all within a 2-minute walk of the dock.
  • 3
Getting AroundE-bikes are the quintessential Formentera experience — the island is mostly flat with dedicated green cycling routes (Rutas Verdes). Scooters need a valid license. Buses run regularly to major beaches and towns. Taxis available but queues form when ferries arrive.
  • 4
Watch the ClockIf coming from Ibiza, allow at least 1.5 hours before ship departure to catch the return ferry. Ferries run every ~30 min but can be full in peak summer. Pre-book return tickets when possible.

💡 Pro move: Environmental rules: cruise ships may not anchor overnight and must depart by evening. No anchor drops over posidonia seagrass — protected by law.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Formentera's only marine gateway is the small marina at La Savina — ferries and tenders dock here.

Insider Tips

  • Ferry timing is everything. If your ship is docked in Ibiza, build at least 1.5 hours of buffer before 'all aboard.' Return ferries sell out in July–August — pre-book online.
  • 🚲
Book your bike or scooter before you arrive. Rental shops at La Savina run out fast on busy days. Reserve online the night before for peace of mind.
  • ☀️
Sun protection is non-negotiable. White sand reflects the sun intensely and there's almost no shade. High-SPF sunscreen, hat, and water are essential — not optional.
  • 💶
Bring some cash. Cards are widely accepted, but smaller chiringuitos (beach bars) and the La Mola craft market stalls often prefer cash.
  • 🏖️
Nudism is normal and legal on all beaches. Formentera has a deep hippie heritage — clothing-optional sunbathing is common and socially accepted island-wide.
