Getting Ashore

Ships anchor in the vast Funafuti Lagoon and tender passengers to the small-boat harbor or Fongafale Government Wharf — a quick 10–15 minute ride.

Getting Ashore in Funafuti

  • 1
Tender to Fongafale WharfYour ship will run tenders to the small government wharf on the lagoon side of Fongafale islet. The ride is calm — the lagoon is sheltered. Allow 10–15 minutes each way.
  • 2
Walking the isletThe islet is extremely narrow (as little as 100 m wide in places) and roughly 12 km long. The town center around the airport, government buildings, and handicraft centre is all within a 5–10 minute walk of the wharf.
  • 3
Scooters and minibusesTo explore further north or south, rent a scooter (~$10–15 AUD/day) near the airport or flag down one of the island's few shared minibuses (fares ~$1–2 AUD). There are no formal taxis.
  • 4
Boat to the Conservation AreaArrange a boat charter at the wharf or through the Funafuti Town Council (Kaupule). Budget $100–150 AUD per boat (shareable among a group) plus a $10 AUD per-person conservation entry fee.

💡 Pro move: Bring Australian Dollar cash. There are no ATMs accepting foreign cards in Tuvalu, and credit cards are rarely accepted. Stock up on AUD before arriving.

History

WWII Airstrip & Borrow Pits Heritage

US Navy Seabees built Funafuti's airstrip in 1943, excavating the 'borrow pits' — craters dug for landfill that for decades flooded and collected waste. Most were filled with dredged lagoon sand in a 2015 reclamation project, but the runway and reclaimed ground still tell the wartime story and underscore the atoll's vulnerability to sea-level rise.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
Bring AUD cash — there is no alternative. Tuvalu has no international ATMs and almost no card acceptance. Bring Australian Dollars from your ship or a previous port. You will need cash for boat charters, food, and handicrafts.
  • 👗
Dress conservatively in town. Tuvalu is a devout Christian community. Women should cover shoulders and knees when walking through Fongafale. Swimwear is fine on uninhabited islets but not on town beaches.
  • ☀️
Sun is intense at 8°S. The equatorial sun is brutal with no shade on the runway or lagoon. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle — bottled water is available at local fusi (corner stores).
  • 🛥️
Book boat charters early. Local boat owners are limited in number. Once tenders start, head straight to the wharf and arrange a Conservation Area charter before they fill up — groups can easily share costs.
  • 📵
Mobile roaming won't work. International roaming is essentially unavailable. Wi-Fi tokens are sold by Tuvalu Telecom but speeds are very slow. A great excuse for a digital detox.
