Guanaja Island, Bay Islands, Honduras

The most untouched of the Bay Islands, Guanaja trades highways for water-taxi lanes and resort crowds for pristine Mesoamerican reef. Christopher Columbus landed here in 1502 — it's still that remote.

Getting Ashore

All ships anchor and tender passengers to Bonacca (the Cay) or to private resort docks — there is no cruise pier on Guanaja.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Tender to BonaccaShip tenders drop passengers at the main dock on Bonacca, the small cay just offshore where ~90% of residents live. Expect a 5–10 minute tender ride from anchorage.
  • 2
Getting to the main islandBonacca is car-free, and the main island has almost no roads (only a short stretch linking Savannah Bight and Mangrove Bight) — so getting around is by water taxi (lancha). Negotiate the fare before boarding; expect $5–10 USD per person each way to beaches or main-island trailheads.
  • 3
Shore excursions via resort docksSome cruise lines (Windstar, Ponant, Sea Cloud) tender directly to resort docks such as Graham's Place on Josh's Cay for all-inclusive beach days.

💡 Pro move: The main island is plagued by sandflies (no-see-ums) that repel standard bug spray. Bring baby oil, coconut oil, or Avon Skin So Soft — locals swear by them.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Guanaja has no dedicated cruise pier; all vessels anchor offshore and use tenders.

Insider Tips

  • 🦟
Sandfly defense is essential. Standard DEET repellent doesn't stop Guanaja's no-see-ums. Coat exposed skin with baby oil, coconut oil, or Avon Skin So Soft before going to any beach on the main island.
  • 💵
Bring small USD bills. US dollars are accepted everywhere, but ATMs are scarce and often empty. Small bills ($1–$20) avoid change issues; change may come back in Lempiras.
  • 🚤
Negotiate water-taxi fares before boarding. Agree on price first — typical rides from Bonacca to nearby beaches run $5–$10 USD per person each way.
  • 🤿
Book snorkeling/diving early through the ship. Guanaja has limited independent operators — shore excursions fill fast on the small ships that call here.
  • 🌤️
Weather is generally dry Nov–Apr, but brief tropical showers can occur any time. Guanaja's pine forest gives it a slightly cooler feel than other Bay Islands.
