Getting Ashore

Cruise ships anchor in Small Isles Bay and tender passengers to the Craighouse distillery pier — the island's main landing point.

Getting Ashore at Isle of Jura

  • 1
Tender to Craighouse pierShips anchor offshore and run tenders to the small pier adjacent to the Jura Distillery. The pier handles modest vessel traffic — expect a short queue at peak tender times.
  • 2
Everything within walking distanceCraighouse village — distillery, hotel, tearoom, shop, and gallery — is a 5-minute walk from the pier. The island has virtually no public transport for visitors.
  • 3
Beyond Craighouse needs a planThe island's single road (A846) is single-track. There are no hire cars on-island for day visitors. Book ship excursions or private guided tours well in advance — DIY transport is nearly impossible to arrange on arrival.

💡 Pro move: Tender operations can be affected by wind and swell in Small Isles Bay. Monitor ship announcements.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Isle of Jura has no purpose-built cruise terminal — ships anchor in Small Isles Bay and tender to Craighouse pier.

Insider Tips

  • Tender port — watch the schedule. Jura is fully tender-dependent. Small Isles Bay can be choppy; listen for ship announcements about tender suspensions and allow extra time for the last tender back.
  • 🥃
Book the distillery tour before you sail. Jura Distillery tours fill up fast on ship call days. Pre-book online at jura.com — walk-ins are often turned away when a ship is in.
  • 🚗
No car hire on-island for day visitors. Jura has no rental cars for cruise passengers. If you want to explore beyond Craighouse, book a ship excursion or private guide in advance — the only road is single-track and taxis are scarce.
  • 🦟
Midges in summer. June–September brings Scottish midges (tiny biting insects) on calm, damp days. Pack DEET repellent or pick up Smidge at the village shop. On breezy days, no problem.
  • 💷
Carry some cash. The hotel, distillery, and tearoom take cards, but signal can drop. The village shop may prefer cash. GBP only — no euros.
