Dominated by the world's northernmost active volcano and shrouded in near-perpetual fog, Jan Mayen is one of the rarest and most dramatic stops in all of expedition cruising. Landings are never guaranteed — which makes a successful one unforgettable.
There is no pier on Jan Mayen — all arrivals are by Zodiac inflatable or PolarCirkel boat, exclusively through expedition cruise operators.
💡 Pro move: If a landing is impossible, the ship will do a scenic circumnavigation of the island — still spectacular, especially for Beerenberg views.
Jan Mayen has no harbour infrastructure; every cruise arrival is a Zodiac operation.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Expedition cruise lines (Hurtigruten, Quark, Poseidon, Oceanwide, Silversea Expedition, Seabourn Venture) | Anchor offshore; Zodiac to Kvalrossbukta or Båtvika📍 | Tendered |
| All other vessel types | No access — landing requires advance Norwegian authority permit📍 | Tendered |
There are no commercial tour operators on Jan Mayen — every activity is arranged and led by your ship's expedition team and is included in your cruise fare.
The most common landing site — a sweeping black-sand bay named for the walruses once hunted here. Dutch whalers operated from this shore in the 1600s; their blubber ovens, storage foundations, and burial graves are still visible among the volcanic rocks.
Find Arctic expedition cruises →Jan Mayen's basalt cliffs host enormous breeding colonies of Atlantic puffins, little auks (dovekies), Brünnich's guillemots, northern fulmars, and black-legged kittiwakes. Hundreds of thousands of birds fill the air and cliff ledges during summer — a wildlife spectacle on par with any in the Arctic.
Find Arctic wildlife cruises →Even without a landing, cruising beneath Beerenberg is extraordinary. The world's northernmost active stratovolcano rises 2,277 m directly from the sea, its glacial tongues calving into the ocean. Clear views of the summit above the clouds are rare — and celebrated on board when they happen.
Find Jan Mayen expedition cruises →If the Station Commander permits, passengers may walk to the small Norwegian military/meteorological station — the island's only settlement, population ~18. The station has a tiny shop where the crew sometimes sells souvenirs, patches, and Norwegian chocolates. Jan Mayen has its own post office (postal code 8099) with a Beerenberg postmark — collect a unique Jan Mayen stamp.
Find Jan Mayen expedition cruises →The nutrient-rich waters around Jan Mayen are excellent for cetaceans. Humpback, minke, and fin whales are regularly spotted from the ship's deck, along with harp seals and bearded seals hauled out on shore. Orca and blue whale sightings are possible.
Find Arctic whale-watching cruises →All exploration on Jan Mayen is over open volcanic terrain with no marked paths — your expedition team leads every excursion.
From the Zodiac landing point on Kvalrossbukta's black sand beach, walk east along the shoreline to the remnants of the 17th-century Dutch whaling station. Old blubber ovens and whalers' graves are scattered among the volcanic rocks. The bay's driftwood — Siberian logs carried by Arctic currents — lines the upper beach.
📍 Open in MapsIf landing at Båtvika (the southern landing site), a short walk leads to the Norwegian station at Olonkinbyen. The route crosses volcanic sand flats with panoramic views of Beerenberg to the north and the island's black eastern shoreline.
