Insider Tips

  • Tender timings matter: Tender queues on large ships can be long. Head down early to secure a spot, especially if you have a west-coast beach or climbing excursion planned.
  • 🚕
Taxis are unmetered — agree on the fare before you get in. Pothia to Massouri/Myrties runs about €15–20 one-way. Drivers are generally reliable.
  • 💶
Carry cash for taxis, buses, and small beach bars. Cards are accepted at most restaurants and shops in Pothia, but less reliably at small stands and on the bus.
  • 🧽
Buy sponges at the source. Natural Kalymnian sea sponges sold on the waterfront are the real thing — sustainably harvested and far better quality than tourist-market imports.
  • 🍯
Local specialties to try: Kalymnian thyme honey is exceptional. Also look for mermizeli (barley-rusk salad with local goat cheese) and fresh grilled octopus at waterfront tavernas.
