Getting Ashore

Ships anchor offshore and ferry passengers by Zodiac or tender through a narrow military-blasted channel into the lagoon — expect a potentially wet landing.

Getting Ashore at Kanton Island

  • 1
Tender to the channelShips anchor in deep water outside the atoll. Zodiacs or tenders navigate a narrow WWII-era channel cut through the reef — the ride can be choppy and a wet-foot landing is common at low tide.
  • 2
Clear customs & PIPA formalitiesAll visitors must clear Kiribati customs and immigration at Kanton. Your cruise director coordinates this — follow their briefing. A PIPA visitor permit is required; your ship handles the paperwork.
  • 3
Biosecurity checkBefore going ashore and on return, scrub footwear in disinfectant baths provided by the ship. Bringing no food, plants, or soil ashore is mandatory for this protected area.
  • 4
Explore on footThere are no vehicles or roads. All exploration is on foot along flat, sandy, sometimes overgrown tracks. Expedition staff guide most walks.

💡 Pro move: No ATMs, shops, restrooms, Wi-Fi, or cell service ashore. Bring everything you need from the ship.

Insider Tips

  • 👟
Wear water shoes. The tender landing often involves stepping into ankle-deep water, and tracks ashore are sandy with scattered coral rubble.
  • ☀️
No shade, no mercy. Kanton sits on the equator. Bring a hat, UV rash guard, and reef-safe sunscreen — the sun is intense and there's almost no tree cover along the main walking routes.
  • 🦟
Bring insect repellent. Flies and mosquitoes can be relentless near the vegetation and the ghost-town structures, especially in the early morning.
  • 💵
Almost nothing to buy, but carry a few small AUD notes. A modest donation to the local school or community clinic is warmly appreciated — supply ships arrive only once or twice a year.
  • 🎒
Bring a dry bag. Protect your phone and camera during the Zodiac crossing — spray and wet landings are common, and there's nowhere to dry electronics ashore.
