Getting Ashore

Ketchikan docks most ships, but at four very different berths — three downtown, one way out at Ward Cove. Where you tie up changes your whole day.

Which berth & getting to town

  • 1
Berths 1, 2 & 3 — downtown (best case)A flat 5–10 min walk to Creek Street, shops and museums; Berth 2 is right across from the Visitor Center. Princess, Holland America, Disney and Celebrity are often prioritized here.
  • 2
Berth 4 — Ward Cove (~7–8 mi north)A free shuttle (15–20 min) runs to downtown, then ~15 min more on foot to Creek Street. NCL and Royal Caribbean often dock here — budget extra time for the return.
  • 3
Occasional tenderingOn packed multi-ship days a ship may anchor and tender near Berths 1/2 if the docks are full. Check your daily program.

💡 Pro move: If you land at Ward Cove, don't panic — the shuttle is free and frequent. Just give yourself a generous cushion before all-aboard; the line can back up late in the day.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

Berth assignments shift by season and ship, but the 2026 pattern is clear: the big premium lines get downtown, while NCL and Royal Caribbean usually run from Ward Cove. Always confirm in your daily program.

Insider Tips

  • 🌧️
It rains constantly — Ketchikan gets ~150 inches a year. Locals call it 'liquid sunshine.' Waterproof everything and embrace it.
  • 🚌
Know your berth. Downtown berths are a short walk; Ward Cove (Berth 4) means a free shuttle — budget extra time for the return.
  • ✈️
Book flightseeing refundable. Misty Fjords flights cancel in low cloud, which is often. Have a plan B like Creek Street or the boat tour.
  • 🐟
Time it for the salmon. Mid-to-late summer, the creek under Creek Street fills with spawning fish — a free, only-in-Alaska sight.
  • 💵
Carry a little cash. It's the USA (USD, English), but Totem Bight's $5 entry and small vendors are smoother with bills.
