Getting Ashore at Koh Lanta

  • 1
Collect tender tickets earlyTender queues build quickly. Pick up your ticket at the gangway as soon as boarding opens to avoid long waits.
  • 2
Arrive at Saladan PierYou land directly in Saladan village — souvenir stalls, dive shops, ATMs, and street food are right here. Sort onward transport before wandering.
  • 3
Arrange transportTuk-tuks (motorbike sidecars) wait at the pier. Agree on a price before boarding — 100–150 THB per trip to Klong Dao or Long Beach. Taxis and private SUVs are available for longer runs to the National Park or Old Town.
  • 4
Return with buffer timeAllow at least 45 minutes to get back to the pier, queue, and tender out. The last tender is firm — missing it means a very expensive boat charter.

💡 Pro move: Koh Lanta is a conservative island with a predominantly Muslim population. Cover shoulders and knees when walking through town or visiting Old Town — keep swimwear for the beach.

Food

Saladan Seafood & Southern Thai Flavours

Koh Lanta's Muslim-majority kitchen means exceptional Massaman curry, fresh-caught seafood grilled with garlic and chilli, and roti with condensed milk for dessert. The overwater restaurants right at Saladan Pier are the easiest option — but prices are fair, not inflated.

Insider Tips

  • 💵
Cash is essential. ATMs are at Saladan Pier but can run low when ships are in port. Withdraw before leaving the village. Many shops add a 3% surcharge to card payments.
  • 🛺
Agree tuk-tuk fares before boarding. Klong Dao or Long Beach should cost 100–150 THB. Longer runs to the National Park or Old Town: negotiate 400–600 THB return with wait time.
  • Time your day carefully. The island is 30 km long. If you have under 6 hours ashore, skip the National Park (35 min each way) and focus on Long Beach, Old Town, or the cave.
  • 👗
Cover up in town. Koh Lanta is a conservative, predominantly Muslim island. Swimwear is fine at the beach but cover shoulders and knees in Saladan village and Old Town.
  • 🐒
Beware the monkeys at the National Park. The macaques at Mu Ko Lanta are notorious snack thieves. Keep bags closed and food hidden — they are fast and surprisingly strong.
