Getting Ashore

Cruise ships berth at Kota Kinabalu Port in Sepanggar Bay, roughly 15-20 km north of the city center — you'll need a ride to do anything worthwhile.

Getting from the Pier to the City

Exit the terminalWalk off the ship at the International Cruise Terminal Kota Kinabalu (ICTKK). Some ships arrange a complimentary shuttle to the port gate or to the city.

Grab a ride (recommended)Download the Grab app before you arrive — it's Southeast Asia's Uber. A Grab to the city center or Jesselton Point ferry terminal costs around RM 25-40 (~$6-9 USD) and takes 30-45 minutes depending on traffic.

Official taxisMetered and fixed-fare taxis queue at the terminal. Agree on a price upfront; expect RM 40-60 to the city center. Group taxis are sometimes available.

Heading to the islandsAs of March 2026, the Jesselton Point ferry terminal has relocated to the South Jetty at Kota Kinabalu Port — ask port staff for directions; it may be a short walk or shuttle from the cruise terminal.

💡 Pro move: Do NOT attempt Mount Kinabalu on a port day — it's a 2-3 hour drive each way on winding mountain roads. Missing your ship is a real risk.

City Walk: Waterfront, Atkinson Clock Tower & Markets

KK's compact center is best on foot once you get there. Stroll the waterfront to the Marlin statue, climb to the 1905 Atkinson Clock Tower (KK's oldest wooden structure), and browse Gaya Street for Bornean pearls and batik.

KK Waterfront to Atkinson Clock Tower

Start at the Marlin statue on the waterfront boardwalk, then walk south past the old Jesselton heritage buildings to the hilltop Atkinson Clock Tower — KK's oldest wooden structure, a survivor of WWII bombing.

Browse the main shopping street for Bornean pearls, batik sarongs, handicrafts, and local snacks. On Sunday mornings it becomes a full street market — the best day to visit.

Get Grab before you arrive. The port is 15-20 km from town — Grab is cheap, safe, and eliminates taxi negotiation. Load it and link a card at home.

Island hopping is easy to DIY. Walk (or Grab) to Jesselton Point South Jetty, buy a return boat ticket (RM 40-60), pay the Marine Park fee on the island, and snorkel in crystal-clear water within 30 minutes of leaving the ship.

Bring cash in Ringgit. Street food, markets, taxis, and island ferry tickets are cash-only. ATMs are plentiful at Suria Sabah mall; credit cards work in malls and larger restaurants.

Skip Mount Kinabalu on a port day. The national park is a 2-3 hour drive each way on winding mountain roads. Traffic or delays = missed ship. It deserves an overnight trip, not a port dash.

Carry a light rain jacket. KK is hot and humid year-round (30°C/86°F+). Afternoon downpours come quickly and pass just as fast. Sunscreen is essential even on cloudy days.
