Insider Tips

  • 🚌
Use the cruise shuttle. Walking through the industrial port area is not permitted — the free shuttle drops you right at Phinikoudes Promenade in minutes.
  • ☀️
Summer heat is serious. June–September temperatures regularly hit 36°C (97°F). Bring water, sunscreen (SPF 50+), and a hat. Most churches and museums are shaded and air-conditioned.
  • 👗
Dress modestly at churches and the mosque. Shoulders and knees must be covered. Saint Lazarus Church provides wraps at the door; the mosque requires shoes to be removed.
  • 🦩
Flamingos are seasonal. The Salt Lake flamingos arrive November–March. In summer the lake is dry and white — still photogenic, but no birds.
  • 🚕
Taxis: agree on a price first. Official taxis are white or black Mercedes. City center from port: €8–10. Agree on a flat fare or ask for the meter before you set off.
