History
Burg Linz Castle & Glassblowing Workshop
Built in 1365 by the Archbishop of Cologne, Burg Linz houses artisan craft shops, a Roman-style glassblowing workshop, and a small medieval torture chamber. Watch master glassblowers create handmade pieces using ancient techniques.
⏱ 1-1.5 hrs🚶 Easy 5-min walk from pier🎨 Hands-on demo
Stroll Rheinstraße and the Buttermarkt past brilliantly painted 15th- and 16th-century Fachwerk houses. End at the Marktplatz to see the 1517 Rathaus — the oldest town hall in Rhineland-Palatinate still serving its original purpose — and wait for the Glockenspiel at 12:15 pm or 3:15 pm.
Begun in 1206, this hilltop church preserves exceptional 13th- through 15th-century wall paintings rarely seen outside major museums. The short uphill walk rewards with a rooftop view over the slate tiles of the Altstadt.
Linz sits in the Middle Rhine wine region. Seek out a Weinstube in the Altstadt for a glass of local Riesling or Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) with a slice of Apfelkuchen.
Linz am Rhein's compact Altstadt is ideally suited to a self-guided loop — pier to Rheintor, up to Marktplatz, across to the castle, then back down.

Insider Tips
👟
Wear sturdy shoes. The Altstadt is entirely on cobblestones and slopes uphill toward the castle and church — heels are not practical.
💶
Carry cash. Small cafes, bakeries, and souvenir stalls may not accept card payments for small amounts; keep a few euros handy for coffee and public toilets.
🔔
Time the Glockenspiel. The Town Hall carillon plays at 12:15 pm, 3:15 pm, and 6:15 pm — plan your Marktplatz visit around one of those times.
🛍️
Sunday trading laws. Retail shops are closed on Sundays in Germany. However, the castle glassworks, restaurants, and cafes are generally open for visitors.
🍷
Local wine to try: Riesling is the signature varietal of the Middle Rhine — crisp and mineral. Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) is the top local red.
🚽
Restrooms are available near the Rheintor and inside Burg Linz. Keep €0.50-1.00 coins handy for coin-operated facilities.
