Getting Ashore

Lisbon usually docks you right beside the old town. Which of the three terminals you're at decides whether Alfama is a stroll or a short ride.

Which terminal & getting into town

  • 1
Santa Apolónia / Jardim do Tabaco (main terminal)The 'new' Lisbon Cruise Terminal and most common berth — Alfama rises immediately up the hill, a 10–15 min walk. Praça do Comércio and Tram 28 are ~10 min on foot.
  • 2
Alcântara terminal (mid-size & luxury ships)Further west near the 25 de Abril Bridge and Belém — ~5 km / 3 mi from the center. Use the port shuttle, a taxi, or Tram 15E / the Alcântara-Mar train into town.
  • 3
Tram 28 from Praça do ComércioThe famous yellow Tram 28 climbs through Alfama (Sé, Portas do Sol, Santa Luzia). Board early — by midday the cruise crowds make it standing-room and pickpocket-prone.

💡 Pro move: From the main terminal, walk up into Alfama first thing while it's quiet and cool, then ride Tram 28 or 15E later when your legs are done — not the other way around.

Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line

All ships dock — no tendering. The main Santa Apolónia / Jardim do Tabaco terminal is steps from Alfama; the Alcântara terminal is further west toward Belém and needs transport. Confirm your berth in the daily program.

Insider Tips

  • 🚊
Ride Tram 28 early. By late morning it's jammed with cruise crowds and pickpockets — go first thing or take the quieter Tram 12.
  • 👟
Lisbon is steep and slippery. The pretty calçada cobblestones get glassy — wear grippy shoes, especially in Alfama.
  • 🥮
Get pastéis de nata warm. The Belém originals are worth the queue, but any good pastelaria will do — ask for canela (cinnamon) on top.
  • 📍
Know if you're at Alcântara. It's far from the old town — confirm your terminal so you're not stranded expecting an easy walk into Alfama.
  • 💳
Cards work almost everywhere, but keep a few euros for small cafés, tram tickets bought onboard, and miradouro kiosks.
