A working Norwegian fishing town on the island of Vågsøy where a legendary WWII commando raid meets one of Europe's most striking rock formations — and the cruise pier sits steps from the centre.
Ships dock at Garpeskjær Quay, which sits right beside the town — no tender needed and no shuttle required for the centre.
Getting Ashore in Måløy

Walk off the pierGarpeskjær Quay is adjacent to Måløy town centre. The main street, shops, and tourist office are a flat 5–10 minute walk from the gangway.
2
Pick up shuttles on the pierOn cruise days, local operators run shuttle buses and minibuses from the quay to Kannesteinen Rock and Refviksanden Beach. Look for ticket booths right at the pier.
3
Rent an e-bikeE-bikes are available near the tourist office — a great way to reach Kannesteinen (≈10 km) at your own pace. Book taxis at the rank near the quay for Kråkenes Lighthouse or farther destinations.

Compact and walkable in town, but the headline sights — Kannesteinen rock, Refviksanden beach, and Kråkenes Lighthouse — all need wheels.
History
Måløy Raid Centre — Operation Archery
The centrepiece of any visit: an interactive museum telling the story of the 27 December 1941 commando raid on Vågsøy — the first fully integrated British tri-service operation of WWII, combining Royal Navy bombardment, RAF air support, and Army Commandos (No. 3 Commando) alongside a Norwegian detachment from Kompani Linge. Exhibits cover 'Mad Jack' Churchill, who piped his landing craft ashore, and Captain Martin Linge, the Norwegian commando killed in the raid.
Kannesteinen is a mushroom-shaped boulder sculpted by millennia of Atlantic waves near Oppedal village, ≈10 km from the pier — one of Western Norway's most photographed natural wonders. Nearby Refviksanden is a sweep of fine white sand regarded as one of Norway's best beaches.
Vestkapp (West Cape), on the Stadlandet peninsula, is the westernmost mountain plateau on mainland Norway, with clifftop panoramas over the open Stadhavet sea. Kråkenes Lighthouse, on the windswept north-western tip of Vågsøy, is equally dramatic — one of the most weather-exposed spots on Norway's coast, with several wind records. RIB boats and guided minibuses from the pier reach both.
A guided boat trip to Selja Island (≈30 min from Måløy) where Norway's only female saint, St Sunniva, is said to have perished. The medieval monastery ruins on the island's flank are among Norway's oldest Christian sites.
Måløy's compact centre features ≈20 murals and street-art pieces celebrating coastal fishing culture, all within easy walking distance of the pier. A free, self-guided circuit that pairs well with a café stop in the harbour.
The town centre is flat and walkable; reaching the showpiece natural sights requires a shuttle, e-bike, or taxi.
Town Centre & Waterfront Loop
1.5 km · 25 min · Flat · Free
From the pier, walk along the waterfront promenade past working fishing trawlers, through the town centre and its street-art murals, across the Måløybrua bridge for views back to the quay, then return along the main street past cafés and the tourist office.
A family-friendly hike up to the Kletten day-trip cabin above town, rewarding with panoramic views over the island, the Nordfjord entrance, and surrounding mountains. Trailhead accessible from the town centre.

Insider Tips
💳
Go cashless: Norway is virtually cashless — Visa and Mastercard accepted everywhere, including public toilets and tiny snack kiosks. No need for NOK.
🧥
Layer up, always: Coastal Vestland weather can swing from sunny to windswept and rainy within an hour. A windproof, waterproof jacket and warm mid-layer are non-negotiable.
🚌
Book shuttles early: On busy cruise days the pier-side shuttles to Kannesteinen and Refviksanden fill fast. Head straight off the ship to secure a seat or a spot on a guided excursion.
🐟
Real working port: Unlike purely tourist fjord villages, Måløy has active fishing trawlers, local supermarkets, and everyday Norwegian life — embrace the authenticity.
🏛️
Raid Centre timing: Allow at least 90 minutes at the Måløy Raid Centre; the interactive exhibits on Operation Archery and 'Mad Jack' Churchill are more absorbing than expected.
☀️
Sunday closures: If your call is on a Sunday, grocery stores and most shops close, but the Raid Centre and harbour-facing cafés generally open for cruise visitors.
