Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line
Pomene is exclusively a tender port — ships anchor in the bay and use ship's boats to reach the estuary jetty.
Pomene's excursions centre on the sea and bush — snorkelling safaris, quad bikes through coconut groves, and a hauntingly photogenic set of colonial ruins.
Wildlife
Ocean Safari — Dolphins, Rays & Whales
Board a rigid inflatable for a guided cruise of Pomene Bay. Dolphins are regular; manta rays visit the shallows; humpback whales pass through July–October. Snorkel stop included.
Ride ATVs along sandy tracks through the Pomene Nature Reserve — past coconut plantations, dunes, and local fishing villages. Ends at the Old Hotel ruins for photos.
Hike or ride to the dramatic 1960s Portuguese colonial hotel on the cliff tip — abandoned during the civil war, now slowly consumed by jungle and graffiti. Stunning ocean views.
⏱ 3–4 hrs rt on foot (2 hrs by quad)📷 Iconic ruins🏛 Colonial history
Paddle guided kayaks through the estuary's mangrove channels, spotting crabs, birds, and tropical fish. Snorkel stop at a sheltered reef accessible only by boat.
Book a private day cabana at the MSC Beach Club — shaded beds for up to six, stocked with bottled water and tropical snacks, directly on the sand with bar service.
Walking at Pomene means sand, boardwalks, and bush tracks — the whole peninsula is yours to explore on foot.
Estuary Jetty to Ocean Beach
400 m · 5 min · Flat sand & boardwalk
Walk from the tender landing through the Beach Club to the open Indian Ocean side. Two completely different moods: calm lagoon vs. wild surf — both stunning.
Self-guided wooden walkway through mangrove forest along the estuary edge. Good for birdwatching — look for flamingos, kingfishers, and colourful crabs beneath the roots.
A long beach trudge to the hauntingly photogenic colonial ruins on the peninsula tip. Go early to beat the heat and crowds. The views back over the bay are worth it.

Insider Tips
⏰
Tender early: With up to 2,000 passengers competing for beach space, the first tenders get the best loungers and book out excursions. Be at the tender queue when it opens.
💳
Cruise card works ashore: Bars, excursions, and spa services all charge to your cabin account. Bring small bills in ZAR or USD only for the local craft market near the jetty.
🌊
Ocean side has currents: The Indian Ocean beach is beautiful but can have strong rips. Swim only in lifeguard-monitored zones and heed the safety flags.
☀️
Sun and bugs: The heat is intense and sandflies lurk near the mangroves. Pack coral-safe SPF 50+, a hat, and insect repellent — apply before leaving the ship.
🏖️
Bring your towel: Towels are not provided ashore. Take one from your cabin. Water shoes are also useful for rocky snorkel entries.
📵
No Wi-Fi or signal: Pomene is genuinely off-grid. Download any maps, music, or reading before you leave the ship and embrace the disconnect.
