Most cruise ships berth at Motukea Island Terminal, a commercial port about 20 km from the city center — independent walking into Port Moresby is not recommended due to distance and safety.
Getting Ashore in Port Moresby
1
Disembark at the pierShips dock at Motukea Island Terminal or, occasionally, the Main Wharf near Fairfax Harbour. Either way, expect an industrial port setting — not a cruise village.
2
Join your tour or shuttleBook excursions through your cruise line or a vetted independent operator. Ship-organized shuttles run to the Harbourside Precinct, the safest entry point to the city.
3
Stay in the secure zoneThe Harbourside Precinct (waterfront boardwalk), Nature Park, NMAG, and Parliament are all manageable with a guide. Avoid wandering into side streets alone.
4
Craft market on the wharfOn cruise days a Sing-Sing welcome performance and craft market are staged right at the pier — bilum bags, Sepik carvings, shell jewelry, and PNG coffee. Prices are fixed; aggressive haggling is considered rude.
💡 Pro move: Port security is heightened on cruise days. Local tourism authorities and police maintain a safe zone around the pier. Outside that zone, always travel with a guide or organized group.
Piers & Tendering by Cruise Line
Port Moresby has no purpose-built cruise terminal — ships use working commercial wharves, with Motukea Island Terminal the most common berth for modern vessels.
Given safety considerations and distances, organized excursions are the best — and often only practical — way to see Port Moresby's highlights.
Wildlife
Port Moresby Nature Park
PNG's flagship zoo and botanical garden is the must-do stop — tree kangaroos, cassowaries, hornbills, and multiple species of birds of paradise in one safe, well-maintained park. The orchid garden alone is worth the entry fee.
⏱ 2-3 hrs🚐 ~20 min from pier🦘 Tree kangaroos💰 ~20-30 PGK entry
The largest Commonwealth war cemetery in the Pacific, Bomana holds over 3,800 WWII burials — mostly Australian, alongside British, Indian and Papuan servicemen who died in the New Guinea campaign, including the Kokoda Track fighting. Immaculate grounds, deeply moving — a sobering and essential visit.
⏱ 1-2 hrs🚐 ~30 min from pier🎖 Free entry🌿 Peaceful & shaded
Over 600,000 artefacts covering PNG's extraordinary cultural mosaic — tribal masks, ancestral canoes, bark paintings, Sepik carvings, and WWII memorabilia. Located in the Waigani district next to Parliament House.
⏱ 1.5-2 hrs🚐 ~30 min from pier🏛 Free (donations welcome)📚 World-class collection
A highland escape 45-60 minutes from the port with hiking trails, sweeping views of Port Moresby and the Coral Sea, and excellent birding including birds of paradise in their natural habitat.
⏱ 3-4 hrs🚐 45-60 min from pier🦜 Birds of paradise🥾 Easy-moderate trails
A private island resort in Bootless Bay — take the short ferry ride out for snorkeling in clear coral waters, a buffet lunch, and a swim away from the city. The only real beach day option near Port Moresby.
⏱ Full day⛵ ~40 min drive + ferry🤿 Snorkeling & diving🍽 Lunch included in most packages
A traditional Motu village built entirely on stilts over Fairfax Harbour — a striking contrast to the modern city behind it. Must be visited with a local guide who has permission to bring guests.
⏱ 1-1.5 hrs🚐 ~20 min from pier🏘 Traditional stilt houses👤 Guide required
Independent walking in Port Moresby is not advisable — the port areas are industrial, distances are long, and safety is a real concern; the one walkable zone is the secure Harbourside Precinct.
Harbourside Precinct Waterfront Stroll
~30 min | Flat | Paved boardwalk | Safe on cruise days
The gated Harbourside Precinct is a modern, heavily secured waterfront development with cafés, restaurants, and shops just a shuttle-ride from the pier. On cruise days the craft market and Sing-Sing performances bring the boardwalk to life.
Port Moresby's main public beach has a revitalised promenade with basketball courts and a beachside market area. It's an urban beach — not for swimming — but pleasant for a walk when busy with locals. Go with your tour group, not alone.

Insider Tips
⚠️
Always use organized transport. Do not use public buses (PMVs) or hail street taxis. Book through your ship, or use hotel-dispatched taxis (Grand Papua Hotel, Stanley Hotel are reliable).
💱
Currency is PNG Kina (PGK). Secure ATMs are inside the Harbourside Precinct. Pier craft vendors may accept Australian Dollars, but give change in Kina. USD is less useful here than AUD.
👗
Dress modestly. Shoulders and knees covered when visiting villages, Parliament, or the cemetery. Light, breathable fabrics — it's hot and very humid year-round.
🦟
Bring insect repellent. Malaria is present in PNG. For a daytime port stop the risk is low, but DEET repellent is still strongly recommended, especially if visiting parks or villages.
☕
PNG coffee is world-class. Buy packaged Goroka or Mount Hagen beans at the pier market to take home — they're genuinely excellent and usually cheaper here than at specialty roasters abroad.
🥁
Watch the Sing-Sing welcome. Traditional dancers in full tribal regalia — feathers, shells, and body paint — perform at the pier when cruise ships arrive. Don't rush past; this is one of the most extraordinary port welcomes in the Pacific.
Getting Around
Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.
🚗 Ride-share: ❌ Not available — use taxisUber, Lyft, Grab, and Bolt do not operate in Port Moresby. Local app-based services (DEXSS, ODESH) exist but are not recommended for cruise passengers due to safety concerns.🚍 Hop-on hop-off: ❌ No HOHO bus
🚢 Cruise Line Shore Excursion
$80–$200 per person
Strongly recommended as the safest option. Cruise lines offer organized tours with vetted operators, security measures, and round-trip transport included.
🚗 Pre-booked Private Transfer
$33–$70 per vehicle
Must be arranged in advance through your cruise line, hotel, or a reputable local operator. Agree on a round-trip fare in PNG Kina before departing; taxis do not use meters.
🎒 Guided Private City Tour
$200–$370+ per person
Local operators such as PNG Trekking Adventures and PNG Value Tours offer half- and full-day tours with air-conditioned vehicles, English-speaking guides, and entry fees included.
⚠️ Street Taxi (Not Recommended)
PGK 80–150 (~$22–$42 USD)
Hailing taxis at the port or on the street is strongly discouraged due to high crime rates. If used, only board vehicles from recognized companies dispatched in advance.
