Ships anchor in one of the world's most spectacular calderas. From the Old Port of Fira a cable car lifts you to whitewashed villages perched on ancient volcanic cliffs — Oia's blue domes, the buried city of Akrotiri, and sweeping Aegean views await.
All cruise ships tender into Santorini — there is no cruise pier alongside. Plan extra time for tender queues, especially when multiple ships share the caldera.
💡 Pro move: Santorini limits cruise passengers to 8,000/day and 500 at the dock at any time — delays are common in summer. A €20/person cruise tourism fee applies June–September (2025+).
All cruise ships anchor in the caldera and tender passengers ashore — there is no alongside berth.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Most cruise lines (independent passengers) | Old Port of Fira (Skala)📍 | Tendered |
| Shore excursion passengers (most lines) | Athinios (New Port)📍 | Tendered |
Santorini rewards those who get off the ship early — hit Oia before the crowds, add Akrotiri for history, or combine a winery visit with caldera views.
The postcard shot of Greece. Wander Oia's narrow alleyways past blue-domed churches, boutique galleries, and infinity-pool hotels perched above the caldera. Stunning even without the famous sunset.
Find Oia village tours →A Bronze Age city buried by volcanic ash around 1600 BC and preserved like a Greek Pompeii. Multi-storey buildings, ancient streets, and remarkably intact frescoes under a modern bioclimatic roof. Entry ~€20.
Find Akrotiri excavation tours →Take a short boat ride from Athinios or the Old Port to the active Nea Kameni volcanic island. Hike the crater, then cool off in the sulphurous hot springs of Palea Kameni.

Find Santorini wine tours →Santorini's iconic black volcanic beaches on the east coast. Sun loungers, beach bars, and warm Aegean water with dramatic cliff backdrops. Kamari has a pedestrian promenade lined with tavernas.
Find beach day tours →A 10 km walking trail along the caldera rim from Fira through Imerovigli to Oia. Jaw-dropping views the entire way — one of the Mediterranean's classic walks. Finish with lunch in Oia.
Find caldera hike tours →Fira town is the main hub for independent walking — explore the caldera-edge path, the main shopping street, and the archaeological museum.
From the cable car top station, head north along the caldera rim path through the boutique-lined streets of Fira, past the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, and out to the Skaros Rock viewpoint at Imerovigli. Return the same way or catch a bus back.
The main pedestrian street (25 Martiou) runs through the heart of Fira with shops, cafés, jewellers, and galleries. A good orientation walk before heading out to Oia or Akrotiri — grab a coffee and watch the caldera light change.
