The world's largest atoll archipelago delivers pure Robinson Crusoe escapism — coral passes alive with sharks and rays, pink-sand motus, and pearl farms so remote that cruise ships are often the only way in.
All Tuamotu atolls are tender ports — no cruise pier exists anywhere in the archipelago.
💡 Pro move: Watch the ship's navigation through the atoll pass — the Tiputa Pass approach in Rangiroa is a nail-biting spectacle many passengers photograph from deck.
Every atoll in the Tuamotus is a tender operation — ships anchor in the lagoon and ferry passengers to a small village dock.

Diving, lagoon boating, and pearl farm tours are the headline acts — most require a boat and should be pre-booked.
The world-famous pass dive whisks you through a current teeming with hundreds of grey reef sharks, hammerheads, and manta rays. One of the top 10 dives on the planet.
Find Rangiroa dive tours →A 1-hour boat ride to a lagoon inside the lagoon — a turquoise pool ringed by white motus and frequented by baby blacktip reef sharks you can wade with.
Find Blue Lagoon tours →Jump from a boat at the ocean entrance to the widest pass in French Polynesia and float effortlessly through a living tunnel of sharks, turtles, and reef fish — no swimming required.
Find Fakarava snorkel tours →Watch the delicate grafting process at a family-run pearl farm in Rangiroa or Manihi — the birthplace of the cultured Tahitian pearl industry. Free entry, pearl purchases on-site.
Find pearl farm tours →The pink-hued beaches at Fakarava's southern tip glow at sunrise. A 1.5-hour boat ride each way keeps the crowds away — this is as remote and beautiful as it gets.
Find Fakarava beach tours →Walk 15 minutes from Ohutu Pier to the Tiputa Pass edge. At incoming tide, wild bottlenose dolphins leap from the rushing channel just meters from shore — no boat needed.
Find Rangiroa shore excursions →Villages are small and flat — easy 30-minute strolls — but the real scenery is on the water.
Walk the coastal road from Avatoru Pier past local homes, pearl shops, and the blue lagoon. At Tiputa Pass, watch dolphins leap in the incoming tidal current — all free, no guide needed.

The main villages (Rotoava on Fakarava, Avatoru on Rangiroa) are compact and easily walkable from the tender pier. Most cruise visitors explore the village and nearby areas entirely on foot.
Bicycle rental is the most popular way to explore the atolls. Local operators near the tender pier in Fakarava and Rangiroa offer rentals; some guesthouses also provide free bikes to guests.
Scooters are available for rent on Fakarava (e.g., Faka Location) and allow you to cover more of the atoll road. Rangiroa has very limited road network, so scooters are less useful there.
Formal taxis are extremely rare on most atolls. On cruise days, a few locals may offer rides from the pier for cash. Short rides in Rangiroa run around 650 CFP; longer distances up to ~1,500 CFP.
Boat excursions are the primary way to reach outer motus, snorkel passes, and lagoon attractions like Rangiroa's Blue Lagoon. Local operators often pick up cruise passengers directly from the tender dock.
