Getting Ashore

The cruise-port shuttle connects cruise docks to Largo della Pace. The railway station is a separate onward walk or transfer, not a five-to-ten-minute walk from that hub. Confirm your assigned berth and permitted exit route for the sailing.

Getting Ashore

  • 1
Take the mandatory port shuttleSecurity rules mean you cannot walk directly from the gangway to the city gate. Catch the free port shuttle bus at your pier — it drops you at Largo della Pace, the main exit point, in 5–15 minutes depending on your berth.
  • 2
Train to Rome (best independent option)Port Mobility lists Largo della Pace to Civitavecchia railway station as approximately 1.5 km; allow around 20 minutes on foot, more with luggage or mobility needs. Its route follows via XVI settembre and via Giuseppe Garibaldi. This is not the distance from your ship. The free cruise-port shuttle connects the cruise docks to Largo della Pace. A separate CSP direct cruise-dock–railway-station service operates on ship arrival/departure days; its published fare is €6 each way per person, payable on board. Confirm the day’s service and return connection. Checked 3 October 2026: https://civitavecchia.portmobility.it/en/shuttles Journey times and fares to Roma Termini vary with the train and departure. Check Trenitalia’s timetable for your date and chosen Rome station; include time for the station transfer and return port shuttle, not just time aboard the train. https://civitavecchia.portmobility.it/en/civitavecchia-train-station
  • 3
Taxi or private transferTaxis queue at Largo della Pace. A one-way ride to central Rome costs €120–150; shared private transfers are cheaper. Only worth it for groups of 4+ splitting the cost, or passengers with mobility needs.
  • 4
Stay in CivitavecchiaWalk north from Largo della Pace to Forte Michelangelo, the waterfront lungomare, and the Museo Nazionale Archeologico (€6–8). The historic center and Corso Marconi are flat and easily explored in 2–3 hours.

💡 Pro move: Allow at least 2 hours to return from central Rome to the ship. Train + port shuttle adds up fast. If your ship is in port until 19:00, aim to leave Rome by 17:00.

Top Excursions

From world-capital blockbusters to empty Etruscan tombs and beach days, Civitavecchia's excursion range is the widest of any Mediterranean port.

Iconic

Rome Highlights: Colosseum, Roman Forum & Palatine Hill

The non-negotiable headline. Built in 80 AD for 50,000 spectators, the Colosseum and the adjacent Roman Forum are a Metro or taxi ride from Roma Termini. Allow 3–4 hours and book timed-entry tickets online before you sail — sold-out days are routine in summer.

Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's Basilica

The world's largest art museum ends at Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling and deposits you in St. Peter's Square. The dome climb (551 steps, or shorter by lift) gives Rome's best panorama. Timed entry is mandatory and must be reserved in advance; lines without a ticket are hours long.

Ostia Antica — Rome's Ancient Port City

Far less crowded than Pompeii and arguably better preserved, Ostia Antica is Rome's ancient harbour town: intact apartment blocks, a 4,000-seat theatre, marble mosaics, and a fast-food thermopolium. From Civitavecchia take a train to Roma Ostiense, then the Roma-Lido commuter line to Ostia Antica station (covered on the BIRG ticket). Allow 3–4 hours on site.

⏱ 3–4 hrs on site🚆 Train + Roma-Lido line from Ostiense🏛️ Remarkably uncrowded ruins

Santa Marinella Beach Day

One train stop south of Civitavecchia (5–10 min, ~€2), Santa Marinella is a proper Italian beach resort. Sandy lidos, Castello Odescalchi rising from the headland, and waterfront seafood restaurants make this the best easy-beach day from any Mediterranean cruise port. Arrive by 10 AM for a sun lounger.

⏱ Half day🚆 5–10 min by train🏖️ Sandy beach, calm water

Terme Taurine & Etruscan Necropolis (Tarquinia)

Within 15 km of the port lie two underrated gems: the Terme Taurine Roman bath ruins (~5 km; taxi), and Tarquinia's painted Etruscan tombs — a UNESCO World Heritage site 15 minutes north by train. Tarquinia's necropolis has vivid 2,500-year-old frescoes in dozens of intact burial chambers. Far fewer tourists than anything in Rome.

⏱ Half day🚆 Tarquinia: 1 stop north by train🏺 Etruscan history, near zero crowds

Rome: Trastevere Neighbourhood & Roman Food Walk

Trastevere is Rome's most liveable neighbourhood — cobbled lanes, ivy-draped buildings, and trattorias serving cacio e pepe, coda alla vaccinara (oxtail stew), and fried artichokes. Do not plan a direct tram 8 journey from Roma Termini: official Line 8 guidance describes the centre–Casaletto corridor. Check the current ATAC journey planner for a valid route to Trastevere and any temporary replacement service before leaving the port.

⏱ 3–4 hrs🚆 Train to Rome; verify the current onward route to Trastevere🍷 Food, atmosphere, authentic Rome

Insider Tips

  • 🎟️
Pre-book Rome tickets before you sail: Colosseum/Forum, Vatican Museums, and Borghese Gallery all require timed-entry tickets. In summer they sell out weeks ahead — book online before your cruise departs, not the day before.
  • 🚆
Buy the BIRG day ticket: ~€12–14 at a tabaccheria inside the station. It covers a return train Civitavecchia–Rome plus unlimited buses and metro in Rome all day. Validate it in the yellow platform machines before boarding — fines are €50.
  • ⏰
The shuttle adds time — budget for it: Don't forget the free port shuttle between your ship and Largo della Pace (each way). Add 15–20 min each end when planning your Rome schedule.
  • 💶
Cash for smaller shops: Cards are widely accepted in Rome and Civitavecchia, but small trattorias and market vendors often prefer cash. Bancomat (ATM) machines are plentiful near the train station.
  • ☀️
Summer heat is serious: July–August highs regularly hit 35–38°C (95–100°F) in Rome. Plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning, carry a refillable bottle (Rome's nasoni public fountains are everywhere), and use the cool of churches for midday breaks.

Getting Around

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.

🚗 Ride-share: ✅ UberUber operates in Civitavecchia (Uber Black/NCC licensed drivers). Bolt launched in Italy in June 2026 but only in Milan. Lyft not available in Italy.

🚍 Hop-on Hop-off Bus

Direct bus from Civitavecchia port to Rome (Vatican & Termini Station). Journey is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes; must be booked in advance.

🚂 Train

€5–€10 per person

Port Mobility lists Largo della Pace to Civitavecchia railway station as approximately 1.5 km; allow around 20 minutes on foot, more with luggage or mobility needs. Its route follows via XVI settembre and via Giuseppe Garibaldi. This is not the distance from your ship. Journey times and fares to Roma Termini vary with the train and departure. Check Trenitalia’s timetable for your date and chosen Rome station; include time for the station transfer and return port shuttle, not just time aboard the train. A direct CSP dock–station shuttle is listed at €6 each way per person on ship days; do not confuse it with the free shuttle to Largo della Pace. Checked 3 October 2026: https://civitavecchia.portmobility.it/en/shuttles

🚕 Taxi to Rome

€125–€180

Licensed taxis are available at the port gate. Confirm the fixed fare before departing; avoid unmarked vehicles that may overcharge.

🚐 Private Transfer

€145–€215

Pre-booked private car or minivan with fixed pricing and meet-and-greet at the terminal. Best for groups or those with heavy luggage.
