Getting Ashore

Ships dock at the Civitavecchia cruise terminal; getting into Rome takes about an hour each way, so plan an early start.

Getting from the Ship to Rome

  • 1
Port shuttle or direct station shuttleThe free cruise-port shuttle connects the cruise docks to Largo della Pace. A separate CSP direct cruise-dock–railway-station service operates on ship arrival/departure days; its published fare is €6 each way per person, payable on board. Confirm the day’s service and return connection. Checked 3 October 2026: https://civitavecchia.portmobility.it/en/shuttles Port Mobility lists Largo della Pace to Civitavecchia railway station as approximately 1.5 km; allow around 20 minutes on foot, more with luggage or mobility needs. Its route follows via XVI settembre and via Giuseppe Garibaldi. This is not the distance from your ship. https://civitavecchia.portmobility.it/en/civitavecchia-train-station
  • 2
Take the regional train to Rome TerminiJourney times and fares to Roma Termini vary with the train and departure. Check Trenitalia’s timetable for your date and chosen Rome station; include time for the station transfer and return port shuttle, not just time aboard the train. Buy tickets using the railway operator’s current instructions rather than relying on a fixed fare or journey time in this guide.
  • 3
From Termini, use Metro or taxi into the cityMetro Line A (direction Battistini) stops at Ottaviano (Vatican) and Spagna (Spanish Steps). Taxi from Termini to Colosseum is €12–18. Ride-share (FREE Now, Uber) also available.
  • 4
Ship excursion or private driverShip-organized Rome tours handle logistics (guaranteed return) but move at group pace. Private car/driver services from Civitavecchia port are popular and cost €150–250 for 1–4 people for a full day — book in advance.

💡 Pro move: Allow at least 2 hours of buffer before all-aboard. Train delays happen — if the ship clears by 17:00, aim to leave Rome by 14:30 at the latest. This page covers visiting Rome from its Civitavecchia gateway; use /ports/civitavecchia-rome for the separate local port guide. Confirm your assigned berth with your cruise line; the operator lists cruise docks 10, 11, 12, 12bis, 13, 13bis and 25, so do not use the unverified Banchina 22/23 reference below as an assignment. https://civitavecchia.portmobility.it/en/shuttles

Insider Tips

  • 🕐
Start early and build in buffer time. Rome is 80 km from the port — trains run roughly hourly. If all-aboard is 18:00, leave Rome by 15:00 at the very latest. Missing the ship in Rome means an expensive overnight.
  • 🎟️
Pre-book Colosseum and Vatican tickets before you sail. Both sell out weeks in advance. Walk-up queues can be 2–3 hours. Use the official sites (coopculture.it, museivaticani.va) or a reputable tour operator.
  • 💶
Cash is helpful but cards are widely accepted. ATMs are plentiful in Rome. Avoid the currency exchange booths at Termini — rates are poor. Notify your bank before travel.
  • 🥤
Drink from the nasoni. Rome has hundreds of free public drinking fountains (nasoni) throughout the historic centre — the water is excellent and cold. Carry a reusable bottle.
  • 🚔
Watch for pickpockets at Termini and on the Metro. Keep bags in front, use inside pockets for valuables. The tourist areas around the Colosseum and Vatican attract skilled pickpockets.
