The 'Island of the Apocalypse' rises above the Aegean in medieval whitewash and stone — a UNESCO-crowned island where Saint John wrote the Book of Revelation, and where the mood is deliberately, beautifully quiet.
Most cruise ships anchor in Skala Bay and tender passengers directly into the port town center. Small luxury vessels can dock at the 200 m concrete pier.
💡 Pro move: Dress code strictly enforced at both the Monastery and Cave — shoulders and knees must be covered. Pack a sarong or light scarf.
Skala is the island's only cruise landing point; most ships anchor and tender, while smaller expedition or luxury vessels dock at the quay.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Most cruise lines (large ships) | Skala Bay — tender ashore📍 | Tendered |
| Small/luxury ships (Windstar, Seabourn, Celestyal) | Skala concrete pier, town center📍 | Docked |
Patmos rewards those who climb to Chora for the monastery and cave, then descend to a quiet beach — a near-perfect cruise day.
Visit the sacred grotto where Saint John received his visions (~€4 entry), then continue uphill to the 11th-century fortress monastery crowning Chora (~€6 museum). Together they form the island's UNESCO core. Go early — both close early afternoon.

Find Patmos walking tours →The island's most popular organized beach, 5.5 km from Skala, with shallow calm water, sunbeds, water sports, and a good taverna. Reached by public bus from the port.
Find Patmos beach tours →Rent an ATV from the waterfront and explore Patmos on your own terms — Chora, the windmills, Petra Beach with its volcanic Kalikatsou rock, and secluded coves. Best way to see the whole island in a full day.
Rent an ATV in Patmos →Local operators offer day trips from Skala to nearby uninhabited islets — Arki and Marathi — with pristine beaches and turquoise coves for swimming and snorkeling. A great option if you've already visited the monastery.
Find Patmos boat trips →The classic walk is downhill — taxi up to Chora, then descend on the ancient Byzantine path through the Cave of the Apocalypse back to Skala.
A flat waterfront loop through Skala — cafés, shops, the small church of Agia Paraskevi, and views of anchored cruise ships in the bay.

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.
The cruise pier is in Skala, the island's main harbor village. Waterfront tavernas, shops, and the main square are all within a few minutes' walk.
The local green bus runs from the stop near Skala pier to Chora, Grikos, and Kampos roughly every 30–60 minutes, timed with cruise arrivals. A cheap and easy way to reach the hilltop Monastery of St. John.
Taxis wait near the port; the ride to Chora takes about 15 minutes. Note that only around 12 taxis serve the whole island, so availability can be limited on busy cruise days — agree on the fare before you go.
Several rental shops near the Skala waterfront offer scooters, ATVs, and small cars, giving you full freedom to explore the island's beaches and villages at your own pace.
Pre-bookable guided excursions combine transport with a licensed guide to the Monastery of St. John and Cave of the Apocalypse. Shore excursion bus tours from the ship are also available (typically $75–$95).
