A Soviet utopia abandoned overnight. Pyramiden is a ghost town frozen in 1998, where Lenin still gazes out over a calving glacier and thousands of kittiwakes have colonized the windows.
All passengers arrive by tender or Zodiac — ships anchor offshore and ferry guests to a small industrial pier.
💡 Pro move: Some cruise lines and tour operators boycott Pyramiden due to fees paid to the Russian state-owned operator (Trust Arktikugol). Verify with your line whether your call includes a landing or is scenic only.
No cruise pier exists — all ships anchor and use tenders or Zodiacs to reach the industrial Kola Pier.
| Cruise Line | Typical Berth / Arrival | Dock or Tender |
|---|---|---|
| Expedition cruise ships | Adolfbukta anchorage → Kola Pier (Zodiac/tender)📍 | Tendered |
| Most cruise lines | Adolfbukta anchorage → Kola Pier or gravel beach📍 | Tendered |
Nearly everything in Pyramiden requires a guided group — that's not a limitation, it's the experience.
The main event. Walk the eerily preserved streets, enter the Cultural Palace, see the world's northernmost grand piano, the empty swimming pool with Soviet murals, and the canteen with its copper soup vats. Everything stopped in 1998.
Find Pyramiden tours →One apartment block (nicknamed 'The London House') has been taken over by thousands of nesting Black-legged Kittiwakes — birds literally filling the windows. Nearby, the Bottle House was built by miners from green glass bottles.
Find Arctic wildlife tours →The glacier visible from town is one of Svalbard's most dramatic — you can often hear calving from the main plaza. Some expeditions include a closer Zodiac approach to the glacier face.
Find glacier excursions →The only fully renovated building in town. Order Russian vodka or borscht, browse Soviet-era souvenirs, and mail a postcard with the unique Pyramiden postmark. Cash (NOK) strongly advised — credit cards often declined due to sanctions.
Find Svalbard cruise packages →All walks here require an armed guide — solo wandering is prohibited and dangerous.
Walk the main road from Kola Pier into the heart of the settlement, passing the Soviet-era apartment blocks and arriving at the central plaza with the Lenin bust facing Nordenskiöld Glacier.

Transport options from the pier — taxis, shuttles, transit passes, and whether ride-share apps work here.
The only way to reach Pyramiden is by organised boat tour from Longyearbyen, roughly 40 km away. Tours typically last 8–11 hours and include a guided walk of the ghost town and a visit to Nordenskiöld Glacier.
Once ashore, the abandoned Soviet settlement is compact and best explored on foot. A guide leads all visitors as polar bear safety rules require staying with the group.
Arriving tour groups are met at the pier by a small minibus that transports visitors the short distance into the centre of the ghost town. This shuttle is provided as part of the organised tour.
From mid-March to early May, guided snowmobile expeditions from Longyearbyen offer the only winter overland access. The route covers approximately 110–160 km each way across the frozen fjord and tundra.
